About the species

Gray and fox squirrels are the two huntable tree squirrel species across most of the Eastern and Central US. Gray squirrels favor mature hardwoods; fox squirrels prefer more open woodland with scattered nut trees. Both species are healthy in most of their range and represent excellent introductory game for young hunters.

Most range states run long, generous squirrel seasons with daily bag limits of 4-6 squirrels. Methods include still-hunting with .22 rifles, dog hunting (squirrel dogs run in the Southern hill country), and stand hunting near productive nut trees. The hunt is excellent training in woodsmanship.
