About the species
Raccoons are mid-sized omnivores (10-25 pounds) occupying every US state and most of Canada. They thrive in nearly every habitat with water access and cover — bottomland hardwoods, ag country, suburbs, even urban centers. Their nocturnal habits, climbing ability, and dexterous front paws make them a unique quarry that requires specialized methods.
Most raccoon hunting uses trained hounds (treeing dogs) at night during fur season. The pelt market drives most effort; coon hunting also has a strong sporting tradition rooted in Southern hill country and the Midwest. Daytime hunting is uncommon. Most states run November-February seasons with bag limits typically generous given how widespread the species is.
