About the species

Canada geese are the most widely distributed and most heavily hunted goose in North America. Several distinct populations exist — resident giant Canadas (now overpopulated in much of the East and Midwest), migratory greater Canadas, and the smaller cackling goose subspecies recognized as separate in 2004. Mature giants reach 18+ pounds.

Most flyways run early September resident-Canada seasons (with very generous bag limits, often 5-15 birds, to address overpopulation), regular migratory seasons in fall, and conservation orders or late seasons in some states. Field decoy spreads and calling drive most success. Cackling geese share the same regs as Canadas in most jurisdictions.
