About the species

Coyotes are the most adaptable predator in North America — they've expanded their range dramatically over the past century, now occupying every state except Hawaii plus most of Mexico and Central America. They thrive in suburbs, ag country, mountain timber, and desert. Mature animals weigh 25-45 pounds with Eastern coyotes (which carry some wolf ancestry) running larger than Western desert specimens.

Most states classify coyotes as unprotected non-game with year-round, no-limit take and no special license required beyond a basic hunting license. A few Western states have specific coyote regulations on public land. Calling with electronic and mouth-blown predator calls dominates the technique world; hounds, ground-blind ambush near carrion, and night hunting (where legal) round out the methods. Coyote pelts hold value when prime in winter.
