About the species

Red foxes and gray foxes are the two huntable fox species across North America. Reds are widespread across the continent except for the Southeast where grays dominate. Both species are 8-15 pound predators that hunt rodents, rabbits, ground-nesting birds, and carrion. They have stable populations and aren't a conservation concern in most jurisdictions.

Fox hunting in most states is open during fur-trapping season (late fall and winter) when pelts are prime. Methods are similar to coyote hunting — calling, trapping, and hound hunting where legal. A handful of states maintain traditional foxhound clubs that pursue foxes for the chase rather than the harvest.
