About the species
Ring-necked ducks are diving ducks that breed across boreal Canada and the Northern US and winter from the Mid-Atlantic through Florida, the Gulf Coast, and into Mexico. Despite the name, the namesake neck ring is rarely visible in the field — the white bill ring is the most reliable ID feature. They favor freshwater wetlands and beaver ponds.
Bag limits typically include ring-necks within the daily aggregate duck bag. They're commonly encountered in flooded timber and pond shooting, frequently in mixed flocks with other divers. Decoys for divers (often longer-line spreads) work well.
