About the species

Gadwalls are mid-sized dabblers that have steadily increased in population across North America over the past three decades. Drakes display understated gray plumage with a black rear; females are mottled brown like most dabblers. They're now one of the most commonly harvested ducks across the Mississippi and Central flyways.

Bag limits typically allow gadwalls within the standard daily aggregate. They prefer freshwater wetlands and feed heavily on aquatic vegetation. Their understated plumage means decoy spreads and calling don't typically exclude them — gadwalls work standard mallard setups well.
