About the species
Brant are small (3-4 pound) sea geese that winter exclusively on Atlantic and Pacific coastal estuaries. Atlantic brant winter from Long Island south to Virginia; Pacific brant winter from California through the Pacific Northwest. They feed on eelgrass and sea lettuce and are among the most specialized geese in North America.
Both Atlantic and Pacific flyway states run brant seasons with conservative bag limits (typically 2-3 birds daily). The hunt is highly weather-dependent and tide-driven. Boat-based blind setups in salt marsh are the dominant venue.
