Q.Food Plot Planning

How much land do I need for a food plot?

A.

A hunting food plot can be as small as 1/4 acre and still pull deer effectively. A nutrition food plot — supplemental forage that meaningfully feeds the herd — needs at least 2-5% of your acreage in food plots, ideally split across multiple species. For most hunting properties, a few well-placed 1/2 to 2-acre plots produce more than one large plot.

Small plots (under 1/2 acre) work as kill plots — concentrated draw points where deer are funnel into a stand setup. They're vulnerable to overgrazing and weed pressure, so they're best for short-window species like brassicas or oats.

Larger plots (1-3 acres) can support multi-year perennials like clover and survive heavy browse pressure. A property with one large clover plot and several small kill plots in different cover types covers more hunting situations than a single big plot.
