Q.Population & Conservation

How do I estimate deer density on my property?

A.

Use trail-camera surveys (the standard "camera census" method): place 1 camera per 100 acres, run for 14 days during pre-rut on a baited site, then count unique bucks and use the buck-to-doe ratio observed to estimate total population. Crude but reliable to within 20% accuracy on most properties.

Alternative methods: spotlight surveys (where legal) along property roads, browse pressure assessment of palatable woody species, or pellet-group counts in late winter. Each has limitations.

State wildlife agencies publish density estimates for deer management units — see state regulations and disease risk pages.
