How do sex ratios affect rut intensity?
Balanced sex ratios (close to 1:1 buck:doe in adults) produce the most intense rut activity because bucks compete hard for receptive does. Skewed ratios (3+ does per buck) reduce competition and produce a quieter, less visible rut even though breeding still happens.
Heavily hunted public ground often has 4-6 does per buck because buck harvest pressure is concentrated. Properties with managed harvest tend toward 2-3 does per buck, which produces more visible chasing and longer cruising periods during rut.
State wildlife agencies report sex-ratio data periodically. Pair with state rut date pages for timing.
