What is QDM and is it right for my property?
QDM (Quality Deer Management) is a hunting philosophy emphasizing protection of young bucks (1.5-2.5 years old), aggressive doe harvest to balance sex ratios, and habitat improvement to support older age classes. It works best on properties of 500+ acres or in cooperatives where neighbors follow the same approach. Smaller properties benefit but can't fully control outcomes.
On smaller properties, QDM still helps even if you can't influence what neighbors do — passing young bucks and harvesting does improves your local age structure and reduces overgrazing. Habitat improvement and food plot rotation pay off regardless of property size.
State wildlife agencies often support QDM-aligned regulations like antler restrictions. See state regulations pages.
