How far should I practice shooting before deer season?
Practice to 1.5x your maximum hunting range. If you're confident at 30 yards, practice consistently at 45. Comfort at the practice distance translates to confidence at the hunting distance. Most bowhunters limit shots to 25-35 yards in the field; their practice range should hit 35-50 yards.
Practice from a stand or kneeling position, not just standing on a flat range. Hunting shots come from awkward positions and have to happen fast. Cold-weather practice in your hunting clothing reveals form issues that summer t-shirt practice hides.
Build up to peak shooting form 2-3 weeks before opening day, then taper to maintenance volume. Pair archery prep timing with state season opening dates on the regulations pages.
