What is the effective range for a bow hunter?
Effective range varies by hunter — the ethical limit is whatever distance you can consistently hit a 6-inch circle from a stand position. For most bowhunters that's 25-35 yards. The arbitrary 40-50-yard 'maximum' often quoted is well past most hunters' actual proficiency in field conditions.
Practice in stand-shooting positions, in your hunting gear, in low light, and at ranges you'd actually shoot. Honest assessment of those conditions sets your effective range — and it's usually shorter than range-day groups suggest.
State seasons and regulations affect distance considerations — see state pages for rules.
