Q.Turkey Hunting & Breeding

What is the pre-breed phase for turkeys?

A.

Pre-breed is the 1-3 week window when winter flocks break up, toms separate from groups, and gobbling becomes consistent — but hens aren't yet receptive. It's the easiest period to call toms because they're aggressively advertising and competing without yet being tied to hens.

Pre-breed gobbling can be intense from fly-down through mid-morning. Toms strut, fight, and respond aggressively to calling. This is the window where decoy setups and aggressive yelping work best.

Pre-breed transitions into peak breed as more hens come into receptivity. Calling effectiveness drops as toms are increasingly with hens. See state turkey calendars for the phase window in your area.
