Q.Regulations & Access

Can I hunt on National Forest land?

A.

Yes, most National Forest land is open to public hunting under state regulations. You need the state's regular hunting license and tags — there's no separate federal hunting license for general use. Some sub-areas (research natural areas, wilderness study areas) have additional restrictions.

Forest Service maps show land status and access. Check both state hunting rules (which apply on the land) and any Forest Service-specific restrictions. Wilderness areas may prohibit motorized access, which affects how you reach hunting areas.

See state regulations pages for tag and license rules that apply on federal lands.
