Q.Stand Placement & Tactics

How far back from a field edge should I hang a stand?

A.

Hang field-edge stands 20-50 yards back into the timber rather than directly on the edge. Mature bucks scent-check field edges from inside the timber before stepping out, especially during legal hunting hours. A stand 30-40 yards back catches deer in the staging area before they expose themselves on the field.

Direct edge stands work for does and family groups, but mature bucks rarely commit to fields during shooting light without a long staging period in the timber. Position to intercept the staging area instead.

Pair edge-stand placement with state rut dates and current mast reports for the food source picture.
