Q.Stand Placement & Tactics

What is the best wind direction for deer hunting?

A.

The best wind is one that carries your scent away from where you expect deer to come from AND away from where you expect them to bed. Specifically: hunt with the wind blowing from the deer-approach direction toward you, and from your stand toward an area deer don't use. There's no universal "best" direction — every stand has a wind profile.

Each stand should be a one-wind setup or a two-wind setup. Trying to hunt a stand on the wrong wind is the single biggest reason mature bucks bust hunters. Pre-plan stand assignments to wind direction so that on a given morning, you go to the stand that's right for that wind.

Wind apps and weather forecasts let you plan stand assignments in advance. Pair with state rut date pages for timing.
